By Steve Moore
When you decide to work from home, you have to make the decision about what business is going to work best for you. You want a business that will not only be successful, but one you will enjoy too. If you are not enjoying what you do, then you are not going to be happy as a home business owner. You will often spend 50 or more hours a week working with your home business, so it is essential that you enjoy it.

Here are some great tips to help you choose the perfect home based business for you. By following through on these steps, you will find a successful business that will be something you enjoy as well.
- Make a list of options and businesses that you may be interested in. Look at books on home businesses, magazines that analyze trends and demands, and even talk to friends and family about what business they think you should start.
- After you have made a list of the businesses that you think may be a good fit, and you should have at least a dozen or more of them, you need to look at the list and find the ones that appeal to you the most. Look at what goals you have and what skills you have and filter out the businesses that don't match.
- Once you have written down a list of the remaining businesses, you need to find the one or two that will be satisfying to you and profitable as well. You may enjoy doing woodwork, but is there a demand for it and will it bring in a good enough income for you? Are there a lot of woodworkers where you are? As important as the enjoyment you will get out of the business, is how much you can make from it.
- Once you have your final few businesses on a list, you need to do a break-even analysis as well as some financial projections about how much work you need to do, to bring in the revenue that you want.
- Now, look at your business and figure out if you can do the entire business yourself. If you are going to need help then you either need to find a partner in the business who can forgo a salary in exchange for a certain amount of money from the company in return. If you don't have a partner, then you need to hire someone and that can cost money and jeopardize the initial start up of your company.
- If you have children, then you need to find a business that is going to allow you to spend time with your children, but is also safe for your children as well. If you are offering photography printing services and you have to use harsh chemicals, there could be safety problems if you have children in the house. As well, if you are running a daycare, then you need to adhere to safety guidelines for children. Always remember to take your children into consideration with any safety business that you start up because they are an important part of it.
- Once you have your business chosen, you need to talk with your insurance agent to find out what kind of insurance you need for your business, even though you are running it out of your house. If your insurance is going to be really high because of the business you have chosen, you may need to choose a different business.
- Zoning is very important because if your business is not zoned for that area, you then need to think about another business. You also need to look at regulations regarding business signs. As odd as it is, some businesses are not allowed in some areas, and that will affect your decision to choose a business.
- Talk to your family and find out if they want to be a part of your business. If your business is mowing lawns, then maybe having the entire family taking part can make things easier. Of course, if you choose a home business of designing computer programs, it is a bit hard for the family to take part. Sometimes a business that the entire family can be a part of, is a very successful business and a great way to bring the family together.
- Lastly, look at the business you have chosen and make sure its organizational characteristics are compatible with you and your family. You want a business that fits into everyone's schedule, and a business that can be organized in your home, so don't forget this very important step.
