What Helps Entrepreneurs Succeed?
By Daniel Offer
It isn't easy to become a successful entrepreneur. Many professionals want to become a financially independent owner of a company, but they entertain notions that hold them back from taking the plunge. Some are afraid to leave behind job security, unable to imagine owning a company will fulfill them. Others suspect they don't have the long-term motivation to succeed alone. Still others are sure they won't be able to afford health insurance for small businesses. Why do people limit themselves with these kinds of notions? They may not be aware that success begins with letting go of self-limiting ideas.
As an entrepreneur, you have to visualize your full potential and then take steps to reach it. There might not be anyone around to coach you or hand over a foolproof guide to entrepreneurial success. Be ready to function as your own beacon of success.
You must also limit the influences of other people as you focus on starting your own business. For example, you might be surrounded by people who believe you're capable of operating a business, and you might experience negative comments from others certain you will fail. Don't listen to these outside influences. Success requires you to believe in your own abilities.
If you aren't sure what personal attributes are required to succeed in entrepreneurship, your uncertainty is understandable. There are many types of business owners. Each business owner brings her own set of attributes to the job. As a starting point, consider these four common characteristics of a successful entrepreneur:
Drive - This essential quality helps an entrepreneur succeed throughout the lifetime of a business. Drive provides endurance during the long process of writing a business plan and during the steps to launching a new company. You will also need drive for running day-to-day operations and making decisions. If you experience significant swings in motivation and question your long-term capacity to succeed as an entrepreneur, you must learn to think differently to become a successful business owner.
Experience - It is a common misconception that anyone can run a business without experience. You cannot just use your instincts in business decision-making. You have to draw upon previous experiences. The alternative is to make a lot of mistakes as you figure out how to operate a business. Because most businesses fail in the first five years, taking this risk is not recommended. You can acquire experience in business, and especially in a target business industry, before starting a new company.
Organization - Business owners are chief executives in their own domain. They must coordinate, direct, delegate, prioritize, and allocate resources, including employees, assets, money, technologies, equipment, and business procedures. Resources are allocated in ways that produce valuable outputs for customers. If you possess strong organizational skills, look forward to organizing your company and making decisions that benefit your customers.
Leadership - Entrepreneurs are not just owners of a business, they are leaders of people. They know how to build employees into a successful team through leadership and two-way communication. Leaders give team members many forms of input into how to organize a business, set goals, and carry out operations. Team members also suggest ways to grow the business, market products and services, invest in the future, survey customers, and perform other high-level business tasks.
Are you a competent leader? Do you have drive, organizational skills, and experience? If you answered yes to these questions, you might have the right qualities of a successful business owner. Business ownership offers a great way to break away from the rat race of the work world. Becoming a business owner is risky, but succeeding in entrepreneurship is rewarding, especially for what it teaches you about yourself.
