Build Credibility by Becoming an Expert

Becoming an expert in your field is an excellent way to build credibility. People will be more inclined to part with their money to someone they know and trust than to any stranger.

When you own a home-based business, part of your monthly goals will be to encourage new customers to find and use your products or services. While repeat customers provide the bulk of your business and financial support, you must always seek out new customers or clients in order to grow your business.

(article continued below...)

One tried and true method to do that is to become an expert. When people find out that you know what your talking about, and trust that knowledge, your credibility increases and they will seek you out for support, guidance and advice and will be more willing to give you their money. There are several ways in which you can become an expert in any field. Use the guidelines below to help you get started or give you ideas on how you can create such a sense of trust with your client base.

Announce Your Presence

People need to know you're out there, and people like to deal with those who appear to know what they're talking about, but how does one go about convincing potential customers or clients that you know your stuff? One way is to create a press release. Many home-based business owners overlook this simple yet effective way to broadcast their presence in the community or on the Internet. Press releases aren't just for big companies. They're for the Little Guy too.

A press release gives a basic who-what-when-where- and why summary of your business or product. Even someone who has never written one can create a press release very easily, who has never written one before. Just follow these four simple guidelines.

  1. In the first paragraph, establish a reason why people should care about what you have to say or offer. Mention any needs your service or product addresses.

  2. In the second paragraph, relate important news or a recent success, showing the reader that you have experience or expertise in that area.

  3. Offer background information, about your company and about yourself and make sure you list credentials here.

  4. Provide contact details, including website information, email contact and of course, phone numbers so potential clients can reach you.

After you finish writing your press release, make plenty of copies and distribute them to clients or customers currently on your client list, or anyone who has shown interest in your business. You can post it on your website and include in e-mails - just remember not to spam! You can even send them to your local newspaper or city magazines.

Broadcast Your Credentials

Credentials can be another easy way to increase your credibility. A credential basically proves that you have knowledge in a particular area and have shown an aptitude of experience or for learning in your field. Writers list publishing credits. Teachers list their educational background as well as years of teaching experience. You don't have to have a Master's Degree in something to be considered an expert in that field, if you can establish that your knowledge level is appropriate and correct in that field. Your experience in terms of years serving a specific area, membership in a particular organization, awards and certificates are viable credentials. List your credentials on your website, on your correspondence and on your business cards. Use them in advertisements and in brochures. In any way you can, share with potential clients or customers that however you attained it, you know what you're talking about when it comes to your product or service.

Write

Whether its articles, or an e-book, or a book, publishing credentials will automatically enhance your viability and reputation as a leader in your field. Many people think they don't have the skills or the time to write a book, or the time or know-how to find a publisher. With the Internet, anything is possible. You don't have to write your own book; hire a ghostwriter. You can collaborate and share publishing credits with an experienced writer. Places abound on the Internet where you can find qualified, knowledgeable individuals to provide writing services to suit your needs. Type 'freelancers' into your browser search bar and the results will give you a good place to start.

If you don't want to go the book route, start with something smaller, like articles or even an e-book. Online publishing companies abound on the Internet as well and will help get your work 'out there'.

These are just a few ideas of how you can use your education, experience and knowledge to enhance your credibility among your clients. The possibilities are as endless as your own imagination. Once your clients and customers realize that you know your stuff, don't be surprised at a sudden increase in business and increasing profit margin. A little bit of effort expended in this area will go a long way to ensure your ultimate success.
