Here are some proven ways to promote your business offline:

  1. Ads in local newspapers. Placing ads in local newspapers is still one of the most cost-effective forms of advertising a business. Not only do they pull well, you also don't need the services of a copywriter to write a 25 word ad.
  2. Print magazines and periodicals. If there are magazines and periocicals related to your business, advertising in them can be very effective.
  3. Flyers. Flyers are a great way to capture attention. Have your neighborhood kids or newspaper guy put them in people's mail-boxes. However, check with your local laws before doing so.
  4. Word of mouth. Provide incentives to your customers, like discounts, free service, etc. for sending you referrals. People usually like to spread the word about a good service. By providing them an incentive, you make their job easier.
  5. Network with related non-competing businesses. Teaming up with related non-competing businesses is another great way to spread the word about your business. For example, if you are a web designer, you may team up with web programmers/marketers and refer their services by handing out their business cards along with yours to your clients. They in turn will hand out your card to their clients.
  6. Stationeries. Every stationary you send like your letterhead, envelopes, invoices, checks, letters, etc. is an opportunity for you to advertise your business. Include your web address on all the stationeries you use.
  7. Promotional items. Promotional items like pens, calendars, mugs, key chains, are cost effective ways to keep reminding people about your business. The more innovative and useful your product, the more your clients will thank you and remember you.
  8. Yellow pages. Yellow pages are widely read and if your business is service oriented, you must get yourself listed.
  9. Radio advertising. Radio advertising is cheap and effective and by properly targeting the users, you can greatly improve the response to your commercial.
  10. Television. You don't have to buy a spot on prime time in popular channel to get your message across. Advertising in local cable channels can be equally effective too.
  11. Press releases. Most newspapers provide a free listing for local businesses that are starting out. Don't forget to send in your business details to presses in your locality. Getting involved in charity and other noteworthy causes can also get free exposure for your business.
  12. Classes and seminars. Conducting classes and seminars will not only spread the word about your business, but also portray you as an expert in your field.
  13. Direct-mail. Direct mailing continues to be one of the favorite offline advertising techniques and mailing lists targeted to specific audience are available with list brokers and advertising agencies. You can rent them for cheap and conduct a direct mail campaign for your business. However, before you rent a list, inquire how often the list has been rented in the last few months.
